Public Space, Havana, Cuba.

The two pictures displayed were taken as part of a research project on the perception of power discourses in public space in Havana, Cuba. Using the method of reflexive photography, Cuban citizens were interviewed and asked to take pictures of their environment with a disposable camera, reflecting on the chosen scene.

The first of the two pictures shows “La plaza de la Revolución” selected by a Cuban woman who participated in the study. The other picture shows her – the photographer.

La plaza de la Revolución is 72,000m² big, which makes it the biggest inner-city square in Cuba. The square is used for political rallies and the centre of Havana’s political power. The building in the back is the Ministry of the Interior, with a gigantic portrait of Che Guevara on its façade.

The photographer said "I like the most the part with the portrait of Che, not cause of the building, but cause of him as a person. I pay tribute to Che… he is the most important person in our history“.

“Before they installed his portrait, they used to turn on the light in his former office at night, to remember him, but now we got the portrait on the façade”.
