The so called "Nordbahntrasse" is a former railroad, 23 km in length, in the city of Wuppertal, Germany. It was thanks to a civil movement and the active engagement of up to 2,000 residents that this unused infrastructure was possible to be reactivated by turning into a "bike-expressway" through tunnels and across valleys. The initial crowd funding initiative generated 2 million Euros within a few days. The association Wuppertalbewegung e.V. was thus awarded with the "European Greenways Award” (2015) and was called "Place of Progress" (2015).
