RECLAIM THE CITY - A social movement in Cape Town, South Africa.
RECLAIM THE CITY is a social movement organised by society groups to encourage government and private developers to include a portion of inclusionary housing in their development proposals to address spatial injustice. Cape Town has a fragmented spatial city structure with urban poor being located on the outskirts of the city away from urban opportunities. Woodstock, one of the few remaining urban areas in proximity to the city is being gentrified for only private development. RECLAIM THE CITY on the 21st March 2018, gathered in the city outside the local municipal offices, at the Civic Centre on Human Rights Day (a public holiday) to demand the location of social housing for the poor in the city. The demonstration was organised by RECLAIM THE CITY, Social Justice Coalition, Equal Education and other civil society group. This is a start to a new urban agenda in Cape Town, by changing public participation processes and dialogues between stakeholders. Do you have or know of any social housing movement in your city?
