Urban movements are social movements through which citizens attempt to achieve some control over their urban environment and influence decision-makers to rethink the needs of citizens. Citizens attempt to mobilize structural change in response to problems they face in their urban reality. The urban environments comprise of the built environment, the social fabric of the city, and local political processes. Literature on urban movements shows a wide range of problems that citizens have responded to with collective action: housing shortages, growing discrepancies in municipal service delivery, insufficient healthcare and education, displacement and destruction of beloved cityscapes etc. We believe, transformative citizen movements can have an impact on reshaping our city experiences.
