Ornaments on Fcades 'Zócalos', Guatapé, Colombia.
The small elements on the façade are called "zócalos". Every building in Guatapé has its own motive, representing a symbol of identification by the inhabitants. You can find any kind of motive, from ornaments and profession related motives, to dragons and "chivas" (local word for a public bus). Although this custom arose in the beginning of the 20th century, even new built houses stick to this tradition. The residents benefit from the unique nature of their beautiful village, since it attracts many tourists. Demolishing or neglecting these houses would be far from imagination. But what makes people cherish and appreciate their cultural heritage, so they take care of its preservation? On the other hand: what makes cultural heritage in some places inconsiderable to persist?
