Panam Nagar - A Ruined City of Sonargaon. Bangladesh.
Panam Nagar - A ruined city of Sonargaon (the oldest capital of Bengal)
The cotton textile industry and trading were always a part of life and livelihood of Bengali people besides agriculture. Panam city is still bearing the memory of Hindu Talukdar's (rich businessmen community), the last residents who used to trade cotton fabric since the late 19th century until the migration of Hindu's to India following the second Kashmir war in 1965, and the subsequent Muslim-Hindu Conflicts. The strategic location of the city helped Talukdar's to take advantage of regional accessibility through the famous Grand Trunk Road to excel their export of goods overseas. The city's built-form got immense influence of Mughal architecture and bears the British colonial legacy which is usually reflected by Indo-European Architecture. This abandoned city has been taken over by the Department of Archaeology under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangladesh. The lost city now took the appearance of a ghost town. The critical question is - how to retain and value the historical importance of this Bengali Heritage in the face of modernity influence?
