UNESCO world heritage site, Stonetown is located on the largest island Unguja, in the Zanzibar Archipelago. The historical city was once one the largest trading ports in the world, bringing together cultures of Africa, the Arab region, India, and Europe. The city is praised by the UNESCO authority as "an outstanding material manifestation of cultural fusion and harmonization", as well as recognizing the great symbolic importance in the suppression of slavery, since it was one of the main slave-trading ports in East Africa and also the base from which its opponents conducted their campaign for the abolition of slavery. Across the city people of different cultures & faiths live together, side by side, continuing to maintain the cultural heritage of the islands.
