Bo-kaap, formerly known as the Malay Quarter, Cape Town, South Africa.
Bo-kaap, formerly known as the Malay Quarter, is one of the oldest Cape Malay areas in Cape Town, with some buildings dating back to early 1760.
At present, the area is faced with forces of gentrification and tourism. In 2015 The World Monument Fund listed Bo-Kaap among places where “cultural heritage (is) threatened by the forces of nature or the impact of social, political, and economic change”.
The government and the community are in a public participation process, to enhance the protection of the area.
Heritage has an opportunity to address these changes and revitalize the community.
