Responses to Climate Change in the Absence of Urban Planning, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

In the absence of proper planning the residents of Tandale Pakcha, one of Dar es Salam’s low-income and high density informal settlements, have taken actions to adapt their neighbourhood to increasing floods by themselves. To stop storm water from entering their dwellings residents have built barriers around their houses as well as some sort of storm water drainage system.

However, it is questionable that these structures are sufficient as a response considering the extent of current and expected floods in the years to come? Additionally, as urban planners, we should ask ourselves what we can learn from these coping strategies with climate change?
