Water Logging in Dhaka City, Bangladesh.
Water logging is common in Dhaka city during the monsoon. Recent analysis infers that poor or inadequate drainage systems are not the only reason for this hazard. It is linked to the Himalayan Glacier meltdown and increased rainfall in the Himalayan valley which triggers recurrent floods and flash floods in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) River Basin.
Nearly 80% of Bangladeshi territory lies within the floodplains of the GBM Basin, the country covers only 7–8% of the total basin area. Therefore, inundation of vast areas of farmland in city’s outskirt due to over flow of six adjacent rivers (the Buriganga, the Turag, the Balu, the Shitalakkhya, the Dhaleshwari and the Bangshi) restrict inner-city rain water to run-off and drain out properly. The situation has got even worst due lacking inclusive urban planning practices.
It is time to widely discuss and re-think the coping mechanism and inclusive strategies for the city.
