Climate Change Adaptation, Valdivia, Chile.
Chile is among the countries which have agreed to take actions to mitigate and to adapt to climate change. Valdivia, located in the Southern part of Chile, is one of the rainiest cities in South America. Moreover, during winter it gets relatively cold in the city. Most people in Valdivia use wood to heat their homes. In consequence of that, the air of the city is quite polluted due to the daily wood burning. However, 2 years ago the municipal government has passed a new rule which says that the city's inhabitants are not allowed to have their ovens burning 24/7. The city is divided into zones and only when it is the zones' turn their inhabitants are allowed to heat their ovens.
It's questionable if this is an effective long term solution. What alternatives are provided to people to heat their houses? Is there a strategy in place how to make the transition to alternative sources of energy and who is paying for it?
