Climate change is affecting life under water: 90% of the world's coral reefs are expected do disappear by 2050, threatening marine life that supports the jobs, food, tourism, medicine and protection of nearly half a billion people. In the city of El Nido, Palawan, in the Phillipines, the effects of human activities together with climate change can already be felt by the local community and tourists. As corals die, fish stock that supports the local economy decrease, forcing more inhabitants to migrate to tourism activities - which are done in a unplanned and unsustainable way, stressing even more the remaining corals. Not only that, most of the local buildings and constructions are done on the shore line, being highly vulnerable to natural hazards. Healthy coral reefs serve as an shield for intense waves that could destroy these communities. Therefore, whenever thinking about spatial planning in coastal cities, planners should also think about planning on the water.
