While regions are suffering from floods, others are suffering from drought. Urban heat Islands are a common phenomenon whereby urban areas experience higher air temperatures than their rural surroundings. Some of the factors that provoke heat islands are building materials, city size, population density, pollution levels, and types of land uses. The Greater Cairo Region has been suffering from a constant increase of its temperature over the last three decades.
Simultaneously, the expansion of the urban area has barely been accompanied by the creation of proper green spaces.
Meanwhile, various initiatives all around the city try to mitigate the current high temperatures through greening rooftops.
