Climate Change Mitigation in Bissighin, Burkina Faso.

Climate change affects Bissighin, Burkina Faso, in several ways. The most critical and frequent are floods. Among the causes insufficient planning, equipment and infrastructure for adequate sanitation and rainwater use. UN-Habitat is developing different projects to increase the resilience of the poorest neighborhoods of Bissighin. New roads, and more trees are now part of the urban landscape and help to absorb and collect rainwater. Generally the idea is to create a city that not only on the environmental side is able to deal with climate impacts but also to enhance social resilience and gender equality. Most of the women employed in the brick manufacturing process, causing them serious health problems, are now engaged in a community work project on waste management and recycling. This allows them to work for more years with positive impacts on the family economy. As demonstrated by this example climate change is not only about environment and infrastructure, it is also strongly linked to community and society.
