Melting Glaciers of the Andes, Santiago, Chile.
#climatechange and #globalwarming are affecting glaciers worldwide. The city of Santiago in Chile depends on the Andes glaciers for its water supply. However, water availability is predicted to fall 40% by 2070, due to temperature rise and the continuous glacier retreat, aggravating Santiago's current water crises. In a new strategy to make the city more resilient, local government is developing a water fund to help secure supplies for the city, and measures to protect water sources from the high Andes from over exploitation. Nevertheless, this issue is aggravated by the fact that water is privatized in Chile, and with a high inequality index on Santiago's population, the question is how to assure an even distribution of this commodity, essencial for all human life, in the upcoming future? When thinking about climate change, the matter is not just environmental - any urban or spatial planning needs to address also social inequalities to assure a resilient city.
