Vernacular Architecture, Meersburg, Germany.
Traditional timber framing houses are an architect vernacular typology used mostly in northern European countries. In the city of Meersburg, Germany, many ancient houses are still standing, together with medieval buildings. When it comes to housing, it is always important to consider the native construction techniques: usually, these houses are adapted over time according to its local climate conditions, a design forged by generations. This is not only important in Europe, it can be seen as a good way of implementing housing internationally. Planners should always seek to enforce local based housing materials due to their suitability in the regions. It does not mean that these techniques shouldn't be adapted to the modern needs, but their advantages of creating local identity as well as encouraging the local materials market (and therefore reducing transportation costs and emissions), should always be considered as a sustainable approach for housing.
