When to use improvisational housing? Bonn, Germany.
The use of housing containers in German municipalities was on its peak during the so called 'refugee crisis' in 2015/16. With the winter season ahead, many of those ad hoc solutions still remain in use though many criticise the lack of good isolation. A way heftier critique hit local politics for having missed out focusing on social housing in general for the past decade and even more. Urban rents and apartment prices are skyrocketing seemingly with no end. A so called 'rent-break' (Mietpreisbremse), which was introduced as a response by many local governments, does not prevent from what happens when housing remains just a commodity on the free market. The human right for housing, as there is supposed to be one, is no matter of improvisation or transitional solution - at least it shouldn't be one. In light of the refugee crisis the lack of affordable housing became obvious even in wealthy European nations. When talking about sustainability, this social matter urgently needs to be tackled.
