Art against Crime, The Case of Ecatepec, Mexico.

We already posted on the case of Ecatepec in Mexico a couple of month ago. However, the street art project in Ecatepec, one of Mexico’s most dangerous municipalities, has brought amazing art work to it's neighbourhoods and therefore is worth being showcased again. The project involved the painting of around 50 walls in different public spaces. Local artists in cooperation with various famous international artists worked in the project together. Among the artists Guido Van Helten, John Pugh, David Flores, Teddy Kelly and Kenta Torii, Farid Rueda, Ricardo Angeles, Tonalli Jaguar and others. Through the use of art in public spaces it was aimed at rehabilitating the municipality's neigbourhoods affected by high crime rates, as well as to attract tourism, generate job opportunities and to create a feeling of pride and belonging among their residents.

What do you think? How much power can we assign to art as a means to reduce or prevent crime? Share your opinion and experience in using art in crime prevention.
