Kimberley city is in Northern Cape South Africa. It’s well known for the diamond discovery, first stock exchange in Africa, first city in the Southern Hemisphere and the second in the world after Philadelphia to integrate electric street lights into its infrastructure. It is here in Kimberley where 21.25-carat (4.3 g) diamond known as eureka (star of South Africa) was discovered. The area was known as “new rush” and later renamed as “Kimberley”. It was estimated that 55 000 miners rushed and converged to Kimberley where they dug the hill using picks and shovels to extract diamonds. The hill transformed into the “Big Hole” which is my favourite spot in Kimberley. It is the epitome of historical and heritage significant of Kimberley. The town establishment centred around the Big Hole which is regarded as the world largest man-made hole which is 214 meters deep with a surface area of 17 hectares and a perimeter of 1,6 km (http://thebighole.co.za, 2017). It will be difficult to dissociate mining and Kimberley’ space economy. The Big Hole attracts local and international tourists. The mining activities are still occurring but in smaller scale in comparison to the decades ago. The diversification will serve as a catalyst to revitalise the economic activities and land development. The Big Hole will still serve as a growth point culminating the economic development.
