The Hukou System. Increasing Disparities between Urban and Rural Citizens. China.

Hukou is China’s household registration system. It derives from ancient traditions but its rules changed over time according to political and economic reforms. Starting from the foundation of the People’s Republic of China the Hukou system has been identified as one of the causes for the increasing disparities between urban and rural citizens. This is due to different rights and benefits recognized according to place of birth. Over the last decades enormous migration flows of rural people towards cities, hoping for better jobs and life conditions, haven been seen in China. Even though in recent years Hukou system reforms seem to have taken steps in the ‘right’ direction still up to today millions of people continue to be victims of discrimination, prejudice and low salaries.

How far are we form a full recognition of the “right to the city”? How far are we from making cities more inclusive and democratic places?
