Mobile Toilets in Buses - A positive ad-hoc response to poor gender-responsive planning. Pune, India
Access to safe and hygienic public toilets remain a daily struggle for women even in urban India. The poor condition and maintenance of washrooms have pushed women away from using them. Moreover, public restrooms usually do not cater for women-specific biological needs. AlI in all there are far too few public toilets for women. The Pune Municipal Corporation has introduced mobile toilets in renovated public buses which are accessible to women only. The initiative aims at increasing the number of toilets for women. A positive ad-hoc response to a case of poor gender-responsive planning!
