Twaa Mtaro. Mobile Apps for Risk Prevention. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Twaa Mtaro (http://site.twaamtaro.org/) is an ICT platform with which the cleanliness and state of existing drainages in Dar es Salaam are monitored. The state and cleanliness of drainages significantly determine different risks, such as flood risks or health risks. The communication platform Twaa Mtaro depends on residents who report to the platform through a mobile phone application. The platform collects, stores, and disseminates the received information on the drainages and also serves as an early warning system during times of emergency. Twaa Mtaro supports the communication between community leaders such as Sub-Ward Leaders, community members and drainage experts from the municipal authorities where the information is received and processed. Once e.g. damages or blockages are reported a municipal expert processes the information received and decides which actions need to be taken. The initiative is funded by the World Bank Tanzania as a way to support innovation and technology in Tanzania where simple, and open source tools are used to understand and find solutions to problems communities face in their everyday lives.
