Approximately more than half the world’s population lives in urban areas. Climate change and global warming affects urban life in every respect for instance “heat islands”, continuous light and sea level changes as well as severe droughts and floods paralyzing urban areas. The Harbour Arch development is located near the N1 and N2 (Highway roads) interchange in Cape Town. Due to the location of this precinct, there is a great amount of carbon footprint surrounding the precinct, inclusivity and reducing the amount of carbon footprint is the main objective of the development. Sustainability, energy-wise innovation, water-saving technology, heat reducing aspects, water-saving devices, low-energy LED lighting, rainwater harvesting and refuse recycling forms part of the development. Hotel, residential uses, commercial uses, open spaces for recreational and transport uses forms part of the mixed use land development.

Can incentive for non-motorized transport for e.g. bicycle be used as leverage for developers to implement urban space?
