A New Activist Urban Movement - Augusta Park and the New Parks. Sao Paulo, Brazil.

A new activist urban movement is emerging in São Paulo, Brazil. It evokes a deep awareness and sensitivity in relation to the urban environment, putting in debate the false dichotomy between city and nature. One of the central point on this debate is the so-called Augusta Park, a remaining forested area in the center of the megalopolis, which is acclaimed by the population to be transformed into a park, but suffers a fierce dispute with the real estate market interest of developing the area into a high class building complex.

Throughout the last few years the struggle of the Augusta Park grew and connected to another 48 green areas at risk in São Paulo, forming the Rede Novos Parques alliance. In all these ecological territories, urban nature is defended as a common good: new urban parks managed by the population as laboratories for a new, more ecological, conscious and democratic way of life.
